When people say that Melody/River “magically switched sides” in LKH:

I just facepalm.

And then anger takes over.

The whole damn episode BUILDS to saving The Doctor because she sees his actions defy everything she’s ever known about him!! It’s infuriating when I see people completely ignore this or fail to grasp it whatsoever.

“A significant factor in Hitler’s rise to power is that The Doctor didn’t stop him!”

Take a moment to look at that sentence. Why do you think she says that? Look at the school scenes and Mels’s attitude: she thinks The Doctor purposely lets horrible things happen! She, herself, being a prime example because The Doctor never saved her when she was alone and dying on the cold streets of New York.) That’s all Kovarian and The Silence have ever burned into her brain!

So what a shock it was for her to witness with her own eyes that The Doctor was fighting to help people literally up until his very last breath! And all of the sudden she realizes that she may have just made a literally fatal error. (Think of it as yourself causing a fatal car accident: if you had the power to correct that mistake and bring that person back to life, wouldn’t you do it even if it cost you greatly?) That’s what River does: she gives up something of great personal cost (near immortality) in the hopes of correcting a fatal mistake. But even as she’s doing it she’s not sure if it’s the right thing to do which is why she looks to her mother and asks if The Doctor is worth it. And that is why she ends up going to Luna University to “find a good man.”

Melody is literally looking for evidence of a good man. This goes back to the school scenes at the beginning of the episode: she’s always defaulted to, “Look at history: The Doctor didn’t stop it,” because that’s what she’s been told. Now, at Luna University, she makes an agential decision to use archaeology to look at history - textually and physically - and do the research on The Doctor herself. She is hoping to discover that she wasn’t wrong in saving him, but instead of taking someone else’s word for it (The Silence’s, her mother’s), she has to find out for herself. This is an enormous step for Melody and that is the first step into her becoming River Song.

How adorable is this!
I was just watching part one of The Adventure Games walkthrough of “The Gunpowder Plot” and they’ve put The Doctor (and River’s) cot in it!
